Sport is still often viewed as being something ‘for the men’. For years, there were different rules for women in sport. But recently the coverage of women’s sport has become more serious. One of the most obvious examples is the change in the reporting of women’s football, the fastest growing sport amongst girls and women.

Hockey

The game of field hockey made its introduction in the Netherlands in Haarlem. Pim Mulier (1865-1954) introduced hockey there, after he learned the rules of the game at boarding school in England. In the event of a shortage of men, women participated in the game.
